Ingredients

Bread Bowls

1/2 cup warm water
1/2 cup milk
1 large egg, room temperature
2 Tbs butter
1 tsp salt
1/4 cup sugar
3 cup all-purpose flour
2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
1/4 cup cornmeal for dusting the baking pan

Basic Bread Bowl Directions

  1. In a small bowl beat the egg and milk.
  2. Place in the microwave the liquid until the milk is slighly warm. (about 40 seconds on high)
  3. Place the milk/egg mixture along with the other ingerdients onto your bread machine in the order directed by the manufacturer.
  4. Set on dough cycle.
  5. When the dough has completed it's cycle. place it on a floured board and cut into 4 pieces.
  6. Shape each piece into round balls, taking care not to overwork the dough.

  8. Lightly dust baking sheet with cornmeal and place the ball on a dark-colored baking sheet and cover with clean dish towel. Let rise in a warm area for about 1 hour.
  9. Preheat oven to 350°.
  10. in a small bowl, seoperate 1 egg. discarding the yolk.
  11. Add 1 tablespoon of watter and whisk well or until frothy.
  12. brush lightly over risen dough
  13. Place in oven and bake for 20-25 minutes or the bread bowls are a golden brown.
  14. Remove prom pan and let cool on racks.
  15. Cut a circle in the top of the bowl, removing the top and hollow out the bowl, taking care not to hollow out too much. 
  16. Add any of your favorite soup, stews or chowder and enjoy!

Notes

This recipe makes about 1 ½  pounds of dough.
