Ingredients

Old-fashioned Bread

1 1/2 Tbs yeast
1 1/2 cup warm water
1/8 cup sugar
3/4 tsp salt
1 large egg, well beaten
1/8 cup dark Karo syrup
2 1/2 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup powdered milk
1/4 cup melted shortening

Old-Fashioned Wheat Bread Directions

  1. Mix together yeast, warm water, and sugar in a bowl and set in a warm place.
  2. Add salt, egg, and karo syrup.
  3. Mix well.
  4. Add one cup of the whole wheat flour and powdered milk.
  5. Mix well.
  6. Add rest of the flour, 1/2 cup at a time, to make a soft dough. Knead dough.
  7. Let rise in a greaed bowl until double in size.
  8. Punch down and shope into loaf.
  9. Place in greasen pan and let rise to top of pan.
  10. Bake at 350° oven for over 45 minutes or until bread sounds hollow.
