1/2 cup butter or margarine |
1 1/2 cup sugar |
2 large eggs |
2 1/4 cup flour (measured and sifted three times) |
1 teaspoon vanilla |
2 Tablespoons cocoa |
1 teaspoon salt |
1 cup buttermilk |
1 Tablespoon vinegar |
1 teaspoon baking soda |
red food coloring |
Frosting:
1 cup milk |
5 Tablespoons flour |
1 cup butter |
1 cup powdered sugar, sifted |
Red Velvet Cake Directions
- Cream sugar and shortening until fluffy. Add eggs and beat 1 minute on electric mixer. Put Cocoa and food coloring in cup. Make a paste and add to the sugar mixture. Add salt. Put vanilla in buttermilk and add slowly to mixture alternately with flour. Put vinegar and soda in cup, mix, and add to mixture.
- Put batter in 3-8 inch layer pans. Bake at 350° for 25 to 30 minutes. Cool on rack, frost.
- For the frosting: cut the milk and flour until thick, then cool in refrigerator. Beat the butter, powdered sugar and vanilla and add to milk and flour mixture a little at a time.
