Ingredients

Toffee Bars

1 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
1 cup butter or margarine, softened
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 large egg, separated
1/2 cup walnuts, finely chopped

Toffee Bars Directions

  1. Make this recipe 2 hours before serving or earlier in the day
  2. Preheat the oven to 275°
  3. Grease a 15 1/2 x10 1/2 inch jellyroll pan.
  4. Into a large bowl, measure all ingredients except egg white and walnut's.
  5. With a mixer, at low speed, beat ingredients at low speed just until blended, occasionally scraping the bowl with a rubber spatula.
  6. Increase speed to medium, beat until well mixed.
  7. Pat dough evenly into pan,
  8. In cup, beat egg white slightly; brush over top of dough and sprinkle with walnuts.
  9. Bake 1 hour 10 minutes, or until golden.
  10. Immediately, cut into 12 strips, then cut each strip into 4 pieces to make 48 bars in all.
  11. Remove bars from pan to cool on a wire rack.
  12. Store in tightly covered container.
  13. Makes 4 dozen bars
